The Marketplace Pilot Scheme Autumn/Winter 2012/13
Arts Audiences is pleased to announce The Marketplace Pilot Scheme – a wonderful opportunity for venues and promoters to engage and collaborate on projects from early stages through to application. This scheme, which will take place November 2012 – January 2013, is initiated by Arts Audiences and the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and managed by Irish Theatre Institute and Theatre Forum. See further information below:

The Marketplace Pilot Scheme
A need has been identified to establish better dialogue on artistic programming between venues and promoters which allows both parties to engage and collaborate from early stages of project development.  Strong, comprehensive communication would mean that venues would have the opportunity to express to promoters their needs and aims and those of their audiences. This communication could inform the planning of projects and assist venues and promoters in addressing their aims and ambitions together.

To initiate discussion, venues will give a detailed profile of work that has been successful over the past number of years and the kinds of work they are interested in programming in the future. It is thought that this will allow organisations to approach their touring applications with a fully formed partnership in place whereby both promoter and venue enter with shared risk and shared agreed goals.

A small number of venues and promoters will be invited to take part in a pilot phase.  This pilot will take place one day per month over three months i.e. three one-day sessions:

Session 1: The Scoping Exercise
A number of invited venues from across the country will gather to analyse their organisations looking at various areas such as audience profile, programme information and financial considerations e.g. guarantee/ split. The venues will connect with their existing network colleagues and examine art form and calendar issues for the coming year. Each venue will work on its venue profile which will be presented in Session 2.

Session 2: The Venue Programme Pitches
Each venue will make a presentation to an invited number of promoters (large and medium scale) across the performing arts. This pitch will afford each venue an opportunity to speak about their organisation from a programming, financial, audience and technical point of view. The promoters will be from various disciplines including music, theatre, dance and opera. Each promoter will be provided with an opportunity to pose questions to the venues which can inform the development of new ideas.

Session 3: The Promoters’ Response
Development of these new ideas will result in all promoters coming to the final session to discuss projects with the venues in further detail. Each promoter will present their project ideas to the venues for the upcoming year/18 months with a view to developing proposals and funding applications with the touring networks and/or individual venues.

It is hoped that the Marketplace will result in touring applications of a high artistic quality that address the needs of promoter, venue and audience member. This pilot will be reviewed to assess the learning and tangible outcomes that have emerged.

The scheme is initiated by Arts Audiences and the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and managed by Irish Theatre Institute and Theatre Forum.
